OPTI: INTRO to RACING!

Do you love to sail, and want more out of your sailing experience? If you are 9 years of age and older, and you want to explore sailing at a new level, come and learn how to race a sailboat!


You will learn advanced rigging, start line, course awareness, mark rounding, games, and practice racing.

Saturday from 12::30 pm to - 2:30 pm, A fun introduction to sailing for kids ages 6 to 9 years old.

Classes are held every Saturday morning from 12:30 to 2:30 pm at Fort Whyte Alive

CANSail Lessons for ages 8 - 13

CANSail levels 1 and 2 programs taught in Optimist for beginner sailors for ages 8 -13.

Sailors will learn the basics of water safety, seamanship, and intro to dinghy racing over the course of the program.

Highschool Sailing League

High school students come out to compete for the Championship Cup!


Participating in the Championship is not just about the thrill of competitive racing; it's about the pride of representing your school and the potential to bring home the Championship Cup! Teams, ranging from beginner to experienced sailors, will compete over four nights of intense racing, culminating in the championship race on Friday, June 28th. The winners will not only earn a banner for their High School gymnasium and a t-shirt but also the honor of having their team name engraved on the High School Championship Trophy.


The Championship will be a well-organized event, with the league split into two groups. Group 1 will race on Tuesdays, and Group 2 will compete on Thursdays for four weeks leading up to the Championship race.


Introduction to the sport:

  • Group 1 (Tuesdays) will meet on Tuesday, May 28th, and
  • Group 2 (Thursdays)will meet on Thursday, May 30th.


The race series will start Tuesday, June 4th and Thursday, June 6th, and the Championship will be on Friday, June 28th


The aim is to complete 3-5 races per night, and the top three boats from each group will move on to the Championship!


Where: Winnipeg Sailing Centre (Fort Whyte Alive), 1961 McCreary Road

Time: 4:30 pm (this could change depending on the location of the school the students are traveling from)


Frequently asked question: What happens if I don't know the sport? You don't need to worry. There will be experienced to inexperienced sailors! This is a great way to learn the sport and have a lot of fun!
